How to Play Powerball
Find out how to play Powerball - the mega-jackpot game with three draws a week. You will be able to play online or from authorised retailers when the game launches in the UK, and it couldn’t be easier to take part!
-
Step1
Choose five main numbers from 1 to 69 and a Powerball number from 1 to 26. Get a Lucky Dip if you can’t decide on which numbers to play, or try out our number generator.
-
Step2
Decide how many draws to play. Decide which draw days to enter and play your numbers up to four weeks in advance.
-
Step3
Purchase entries before the cut-off time Ticket sales close at 11:55pm every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, with draws taking place at around 4am on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Powerball costs £4 per play.
-
Step4
Wait for the results to come in Stay up to follow the draw live or check the results when you can to find out how many numbers you have matched.
If you buy a ticket from an authorised retailer, fill out a play slip by marking your chosen numbers or ticking the Lucky Dip option. You can enter multiple sets of numbers on one slip. Alternatively, speak to the retailer without completing a play slip and they will be able to print off a ticket.
Powerball is also available in 45 U.S. states, plus the jurisdictions of Washington D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. You can play in any of these locations if you are visiting, but keep in mind that all prizes must be claimed in the same location where you buy your ticket. If you play while on holiday in New York, for example, you won’t be able to claim your money back in the UK.
Playing online is more secure and convenient than buying a ticket from a retailer. The game works the same way, but you can play from the comfort of home and will automatically be notified if you win a prize.

Go to the Prizes page for more information about the different ways to win.
To win the jackpot, you must match all five main numbers and the Powerball. You get the full prize if you have the only winning ticket, or split it if there are multiple players that match all the numbers.
Annuity Jackpot
The Powerball jackpot is an annuity – paid out over 30 years rather than a one-time lump sum. It is offered this way so that it can yield a higher total return than if the same prize was given an upfront, one-off payment. The amount in the prize pot at the time of the draw is invested and paid out in graduated instalments, providing a guaranteed income for a large chunk of your adult lifetime.
How to Claim
Most prizes won online are not paid out automatically, although you'll still need to get in touch with the National Lottery if you win a major prize. Go to the page on Claiming Prizes for full details, including the claim period."
