While saving up for a wedding, graphic designer James Adams (Kingswood, Bristol) was meant to cancel his subscription to the People's Postcode Lottery. He was asked to do this by his long-term girlfriend. But oops, he forgot, and ended up winning in the October draw which is the first of four winning locations to be announced for the spooky month. The prize amount he won in the draw was £125k.

Adams claims that “incompetence pays off,” adding that his girlfriend asked him to “cancel the Postcode Lottery a couple of months ago” to save up for “a few things because and to be honest, I forgot."

After getting engaged three years ago, the couple have plans for the £125k cash prize, including getting a new bathroom and booking the honeymoon of their dreams in New Zealand. In regards to Adam forgetting to unsubscribe from the Postcode Lottery, fiancée Rohanna Coulthard said “Thank goodness he didn't.”

What is the People’s Postcode Lottery?

The People’s Postcode Lottery is a subscription-based charity lottery in Britain where your ticket is based on your postcode. To take part, lottery players must pay a monthly fee to be automatically entered into the daily, weekly, and monthly prize draws. A 30% minimum of each ticket price goes to a range of charities, and £1.5b has been raised for good causes so far.

In this case, the couple ended up sharing a £1m cash pot with seven other neighbours, who are no doubt also grateful for keeping their subscriptions to the recent weekly Millionaire Street Prize draw.

One other winning subscription-holder says that she got a strong feeling she would win if she subscribed to the People’s Postcode Lottery, saying, "It sounds like nonsense, but something said to me that if I didn't sign up, I'd be stupid." She and her fiancée plan to book a holiday and buy a house with their winnings.
