MegaMillions Jackpot World Record

Updated: Monday 22nd October 2018

MegaMillions, an American lottery, is breaking all records having rolled over for the 25th time and reaching an estimated jackpot of $1.6 billion.  Yes, you read that correctly – the MegaMillions jackpot is going to be $1,600,000,000!

This is now the biggest lottery jackpot ever offered anywhere in the World, surpassing the Powerball jackpot from 13th January 2016 which reached “only” $1.586 billion, and dwarfing not only the UK Lotto but also Euromillions.

What is more, during this week, that jackpot estimate will almost certainly be revised upwards if history is anything to go by – publicity will induce a mad dash to lottery kiosks up and down the USA and to internet lottery agencies in the rest of the World.  So, could you be looking at the first ever $2 billion jackpot?  It’s certainly possible.

It was around this time last year when the MegaMillions organisers decided to change the game format to compete with the other big multi-state lottery in the USA called Powerball.  They decreased the number of main balls drawn from 75 down to 70, but at the same time increased the Mega Ball pool from 15 up to 25. The starting jackpot was also increased from $15 million to $40 million.  To say they have been successful would be an understatement.
