Ireland Wins First EuroMillions Jackpot of 2017

Updated: Thursday 26th January 2017

Ireland is celebrating after landing the first EuroMillions jackpot win of 2017, and the country’s first jackpot win since the rules of the game were changed last September. Seven consecutive rollovers helped the top prize on Tuesday 24 January to weigh in with a final value of €88,587,275, which equated to around £76,052,175.

This is the tenth jackpot that Ireland has won since the game began in 2004, and whilst that doesn’t sound like a particularly high number, it reflects the relatively modest number of players who reside in the country. Every EuroMillions ticket has exactly the same chance of winning regardless of where it is purchased, so more populous countries naturally have a higher chance of landing a jackpot than those with fewer players.

The owner of the winning ticket has already contacted Irish lottery officials to make their formal claim of the prize, and rumours have started circulating that the successful entry belongs to a syndicate of players, but no official statement on that matter has yet been made. What we do know for sure is that Tuesday’s jackpot win was the third biggest in Ireland, and if the winners do eventually choose to go public they will no doubt be hailed as heroes by the nation’s community of lottery players.

The numbers which delivered the jackpot win on Tuesday 24 January were 01, 05, 07, 17 and 23, along with the Lucky Star numbers 03 and 08, and whilst the top prize eluded players here in the UK, more than 537,000 UK entries managed to land a consolation prize of some kind. The biggest of those were found at the second tier, where eleven tickets won £61,152 each by matching the five main numbers and one of the Lucky Star numbers. In addition, two UK players won £1 million each by matching one of the Millionaire Maker codes, which were TPMB56994 and VTNN41191.

With the first EuroMillions jackpot of 2017 having now been landed, the top prize has been reset and the next game this Friday 27 January will offer a brand new jackpot worth around £14 million. UK players will also have the chance to win one of two more guaranteed Millionaire Maker prizes of £1 million each. As if all of that wasn’t enough to excite UK lottery fans, the Lotto game on Saturday will offer a jackpot worth around £8.6 million, as well as a guaranteed Lotto Millionaire Raffle prize of £1 million.

We congratulate the Irish EuroMillions winner (or winners, as the case may be) on their massive success, and we also wish the best of luck to those who will be playing to make their lottery dreams come true in the draws coming up over the next few days.
