Biggest Lotto Win For Two Years

Updated: Monday 11th January 2021

A Lotto player has become the game’s biggest winner for more than two and a half years after landing £20 million in Saturday’s special draw.

It was a Must Be Won draw on 9th January, so the jackpot would have rolled down if nobody had matched all six main numbers. The top prize had been boosted to way above its normal value for the big event, giving ticket holders the chance to grab a share of the glory.

As it turned out, one participant did match all the numbers - 9, 21, 23, 30, 35 and 38 - to pocket the full £20 million jackpot. The other prizes therefore remained at the standard amount and were not increased as they would have been if a rolldown occurred.

Five players became millionaires in the Match 5 + Bonus category, while over 1.9 million other prizes were given away. Go to the Lotto Results page to see a full prize breakdown.

Previous Big Lotto Wins

The last time that a larger jackpot was won by a single player was back in May 2018, when the current rollover limit was not in place. A ticket holder pocketed £21 million on that occasion.

There have been a number of special draws over the last couple of years when a jackpot of £20 million or even higher has been put up for grabs, but the prize has always rolled down.

The record for the biggest Lotto jackpot in history was set back in January 2016, when two winning tickets shared £66 million.

The jackpot for the next draw is an estimated £2 million. Many lottery retailers remain open, but the safest way to take part at the current time is online
