Tesco Bakers Toast £1 Million Lotto Millionaire Raffle Win

Tesco Bakers Toast £1 Million Lotto Millionaire Raffle Win

There were toasts aplenty today as a syndicate of bakers from a Tesco supermarket in Chester were unveiled as the winners of a £1 million Lotto Millionaire Raffle prize from Saturday 7th May. The 12 workers each received a large chunk of dough - £83,333.33 to be precise - but they didn’t realise they had earned their crust until a month after the winning draw, when syndicate manager Cath Batten fortuitously decided to check their tickets again.

“I had checked our numbers on line but for some reason I had forgotten to check the raffle code,” Cath told a press conference held at the supermarket, “I didn’t think it was a winning ticket but when I went to buy the next month of tickets for the syndicate I thought I had better just double check. The machine made a funny noise and the shop assistant said to me you need to call Camelot, you must have won more than £500!”

The group now plan to spend their slices of the Lotto pie on houses, cars, home improvements and possibly even a boat! The lucky ticket holders might have foreseen a big win coming as retail workers were revealed last year to have the fifth most successful profession when it comes to banking National Lottery prizes. In addition, a report on the luckiest lottery postcodes in the UK ranked Chester’s CH code 30th from a list of 121 postal areas.

Playing lotteries in a syndicate also helps improve your chances of winning big, as lottery groups can outspend individuals and play far more lines in a lottery draw whilst keeping each member’s stake at an affordable level. There have been a number of winning lottery syndicates populated by staff from Tesco in the past, the most notable of which was an £18.2 million Lotto win shared by 11 workers at the supermarket’s branch in Driffield, East Yorkshire in July 2005. Find out more about how different lottery groups work at the Types of Syndicate page.

This Saturday’s Lotto jackpot is worth £19.7 million on Saturday night, following a run of six rollovers since Kevin Jones, a bus driver from Crewe, won £6.1 million on Wednesday 18th May. You can buy Lotto tickets online or from authorised retailers up until 7:30pm on the day of the draw. Good luck!
