Syndicate Bowls a Lotto Win

Syndicate Bowls a Lotto Win

A syndicate of carpet bowls players in Colchester is celebrating after matching five main numbers and the bonus ball (or should that be the bonus bowl?) to win £265,914 in the Lotto draw of Saturday 12 September, 2009. The syndicate has 19 members who all play at the Alresford Carpet Bowls Club, so each member is around £13,995 richer.

The lottery syndicate is led by Bill Urwin, who is 73 years young. Bill discovered the win on Saturday night thanks to one of the other members who had watched the numbers being drawn on television and quickly left a message on Bill’s answering machine.

“I always go out on a Saturday evening and over the years I have developed my own little routine so when I come home I always put Teletext on to check the lottery numbers,” Bill explained. “On 12 September, I came home to find a message from a member who had watched the live draw telling me I had better check our numbers immediately!”

He did exactly that. “My wife Joan’s reaction was probably better than mine,” Bill said. “She was very excitable! We sat glued to Teletext waiting for the information to appear about how much we had won.”

Another member called Bill to say that they had also noticed the winning lottery results. The remaining 16 members of the syndicate didn’t find out about the win until Sunday morning when Bill visited them personally to let them in on the news.

“It was lovely to be able to let them know that we had finally won big, rather than just the odd £10 here and there,” Bill said.

The syndicate members originally choose one line of numbers each and have played those same numbers on a weekly basis ever since the lottery began. It took a while for their numbers to come up, but now the patience of the syndicate has finally paid off. So how will the members be spending their winnings?

“The vast majority of us are retired and most have said that they will be spending their winnings going on a few more holidays and treating the grandchildren,” Bill said. “It just goes to show, we may not be able to win at bowls, but we can win on the lottery!”

The Lotto jackpot for this Wednesday 30 September will be worth around £2.4 million, so if you haven’t done so already, buy your lottery tickets today!
