Renfrewshire Couple Unveiled as £14.6 Million Lotto Winners

Renfrewshire Couple Unveiled as £14.6 Million Lotto Winners

A Renfrewshire couple took two weeks to claim their £14.6 million Lotto jackpot prize after they matched all six main numbers in the draw on Saturday 2nd July. The eight-figure top prize awarded to John and Alison Doherty from Elderslie, near Paisley, was the result of four rollovers and is the fifth-largest jackpot paid out by the game in 2016.

The couple admitted at a press conference that the win had left them “overwhelmed”, revealing that they had screamed and cried on discovering their good fortune, which had left them “gobsmacked.” They said they would use some of the bumper windfall to follow their passion for Formula 1 motor racing around the world.

John and Alison didn’t contact lottery officials immediately, embarking instead on a pre-planned family holiday the day after the winning draw and only presenting their ticket on their return. The first person they told about the win was John’s twin sister Julie, although she took some persuading that they were telling the truth as Alison recalled, “she thought we were phoning her up to come up for cake! John’s a practical joker so she absolutely didn’t believe us.” However, once the couple showed her the winning ticket as proof, she also burst into tears of joy.

It has been a successful year for Scottish Lotto players, with the latest lucky winners joining John Bowman of Forfar, who banked £10.3 million in the draw on Saturday 16th April, and David and Carol Martin of Hawick, who claimed half of the game’s record jackpot of £66 million on Saturday 9th January, onto Millionaires’ Row.

Since the Renfrewshire couple’s win, another player has hit the Lotto jackpot, pocketing £11.2 million in the draw on Saturday 16th July. This Wednesday’s draw will offer a jackpot of £2 million, with a further £1 million Lotto Millionaire Raffle prize guaranteed to be won. If you would like to become the next Lotto winner to be pictured spraying champagne and holding a giant cheque, you can buy Lotto tickets online or from authorised retailers across the UK up until 7:30pm on the day of the draw. Good luck!
