Lotto Win for Mining Syndicate
Updated: Friday 18th September 2015
A lottery syndicate of mine workers is celebrating a Lotto win worth £84,720 after matching five main numbers and the Bonus Ball in the game that took place on Saturday 5 June. The syndicate members work at a coal mine near Swansea and the syndicate itself is led by Malcolm Smith, who is 63. With 25 members, the second-tier Lotto prize will be worth £3,388 to each of them, and many of the lottery winners are intending to spend their cash on cars or holidays.
“It’s a great sum to win; it means we can all afford something that may previously have been just out of reach,” Malcolm said. “I’ll be taking a holiday to Jersey with my partner – it’ll be the first time I’ve been on a plane!”
At this point you might expect us to reveal that the syndicate has been playing the lottery since it first began, but that isn’t the case. The syndicate was set up just four months ago and each member pays £1 a week so that they can buy 25 Lucky Dip entries every Saturday. It’s a simple approach but it has proven to be very effective, and the success of the Swansea syndicate will no doubt inspire quite a few lottery players to start their own lottery syndicate.
Malcolm normally buys the syndicate tickets personally, but this time they were purchased by his partner Ann. “She bought tickets from both a newsagent in Neath Market and from Tesco at Neath Abbey,” Malcolm explained. “Perhaps Ann is our lucky charm - I think it’s likely that she will be buying this weekend’s tickets.”
The syndicate win was discovered on Saturday night when Malcolm and Ann checked their numbers against the lottery results. When they saw that they had won a second-tier prize they were understandably delighted,.
“Ann was so excited she couldn’t sleep,” Malcolm said. “I nodded off straight away and phoned everyone in the syndicate on Sunday morning when I was fishing on a riverbank in Briton Ferry. I didn’t catch anything but I enjoyed revealing the good news.”
We congratulate all members of the syndicate and wish them well in mining themselves an even bigger win in the future. As for everyone else, buy lottery tickets online today and you could play for a £12 million EuroMillions jackpot this Friday and also for a £4 million Lotto jackpot on Saturday. Good luck!Published: Thursday 10th June 2010
