Lotto Ticket Expires Worthless

Lotto Ticket Expires Worthless
Updated: Friday 25th April 2014

A Lotto ticket that had won a prize worth £50,503 in the lottery draw that took place on Wednesday 15 April, 2009, has expired worthless. The prize money won by the ticket has of course been donated to the lottery fund for Good Causes, but if the person who bought the winning lottery ticket now discovers their win then they wouldn’t be able to claim a penny of it. If there is one thing that we think must be worse than not buying a ticket and watching your numbers come up, it is finding a winning ticket that is no longer valid.

Whilst missing out on a lottery win due to losing your ticket or forgetting to check the lottery results was perhaps understandable in the days before the internet, these days it really isn’t necessary. That’s because anyone of legal age can buy lottery tickets online and be sure of receiving any prize they win regardless of whether or not they remember to check the results. All online tickets are checked automatically and an email message will be sent to you promptly if you have won a prize.

Unfortunately, this story of a £50,503 win being overlooked demonstrates that some people still haven’t caught onto the benefits of playing online.

A National Lottery spokesperson commenting on the expired ticket said: “Unfortunately, I can confirm that the ticket-holder did not come forward within the deadline to claim their prize and has now sadly missed out on this substantial amount of money. To avoid this unfortunate situation happening again, I would urge all National Lottery players to check their tickets on a regular basis.”

The spokesperson continued: “We tried very hard to find the ticket-holder and it’s a real shame that they have missed out, but there is still one winner – the nation. This money will now go to the Good Causes, adding to the £23 billion which, over the last 14 years, has funded the biggest programme of civic regeneration seen in the UK since the 19th Century.”

There are still several substantial lottery prizes that have yet to be claimed, so we would encourage you to check through any old tickets that you can find using our new Lottery Checker.
