Lottery Luck for Volunteer Gran

Lottery Luck for Volunteer Gran

A National Lottery player who has made a habit of helping other people was rewarded with a Lotto win worth £76,130 on Saturday 28 August. Julie Westerwater, who is 51 and currently works as a volunteer for the Oxfam organisation, matched five main numbers and the Bonus Ball. Julie had cared for her husband John for two decades before he passed away in 2009, and whilst she would of course have loved nothing more than to share her winning experience with him, she is looking forward to treating her three adult children and her grandson.

Julie had purchased a Lucky Dip lottery ticket from her local Spar store, and initially she thought that she had matched just three main numbers. If that had been the case then she would have won just £10, but when she took another look at the numbers she saw that she had matched five numbers and the Bonus Ball to win considerably more. The lottery results for the draw in question were 3, 17, 32, 35, 43 and 49, and the Bonus Ball was 27.

“I’d have loved to have been able to share this with John,” Julie said. “It would have made life easier for us. However, I like to think that despite him being gone he brought me a little bit of luck.”

Julie was presented with her lottery winners cheque on Thursday 9 September, and now she is thinking about how to spend her windfall.

“I’ve always been a saver, never a spender, so haven’t planned anything extravagant,” she said. “I’d love to take a long weekend away somewhere and will spend a bit on my kids. You’ve got to, haven’t you?”

The owner of the store which sold Julie her winning ticket is Innes MacDonald, and Innes was delighted that Julie had been so lucky. “I’m thrilled a local has won the money and that the ticket was bought in our shop, too,” Innes said. “It’s naturally the talk of the area and everyone is saying how deserving Julie is. It really couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.”

We congratulate Julie on her well-deserved win, and wish everyone who chooses to buy lottery tickets online the best of luck in winning the £2.4 million jackpot this Wednesday 15 September.
