Pub Syndicate Wins £4.5 Million

Pub Syndicate Wins £4.5 Million
Updated: Monday 21st September 2015

Lottery syndicates are in sizzling form of late, and a nine-strong pub syndicate based in Lanarkshire won a very nice jackpot worth £4,525,058 in the Lotto draw on Saturday 26 September, 2009. The syndicate consists of regulars at The Doon Inn pub in Blantyre, and each member is now £502,842 richer. That’s more than enough for quite a few pints, but word has it that a celebratory bottle or two of Champagne might also be on the agenda!

The nine syndicate members are all lifelong friends and they have all taken turns to enter the same nine lottery entries for each Saturday draw ever since the game started in 1994. Then, not too long ago, the syndicate decided that that approach wasn’t working, so they switched to playing Lucky Dip entries. Their decision to do so has paid of very nicely, to the tune of more than £4.5 million.

Initially the syndicate thought that it had matched just five lottery numbers and not all six, as syndicate member Bobby McLauchlan explained: “On Saturday, most of us were sitting in the pub watching the draw on TV as we normally do. Someone was writing the numbers on a beer mat but wrote 22, not 32. With five of the six numbers we were still really pleased thinking we’d just won several thousand pounds.”

Several thousand pounds is all well and good, but an eagle-eyed lady nearby gave them a much bigger cause for celebration by highlighting the error that they had made when checking the lottery results.

Bobby continued: “Then a woman in the pub asked to see our ticket and pointed out that we had the number 32 and had in fact won the jackpot. The whole pub erupted. Once I calmed down a bit I made the call to verify our win.”

Like members of the other lottery syndicates that have been so successful in recent weeks, syndicate members of The Doon Inn pub are now spending some time thinking about how they might each spend their £502,842 share of the jackpot.

“It’s fantastic to win and it’s just about sinking in now,” Bobby said. “My own kids are all grown up so my wife already has her eye on a new house!”

Lottery players who would like to follow in the footsteps of The Doon Inn pub syndicate can buy lottery tickets online for tonight’s £2.4 million Lotto draw and the £13 million EuroMillions draw on Friday.
