Euromillions Winners Revealed as Couple From Surrey
Updated: Tuesday 22nd April 2014
The couple who have won the second biggest UK Euromillions jackpot on Friday 10th August 2012 have given their first press conference today after winning £148 million. Adrian, 41, a self employed record shop owner and Gillian Bayford, 40, a childrens nurse, from Surrey, have two young children and live in a modest detached house in Haverhill. They scooped their huge win via a Lucky Dip ticket, bought in a Premier Convenience Store on Queen Street, Haverhill.
At their press conference, the couple appeared relaxed, calm and incredibly down to earth, and chatted easily to the reporter, as they described the shock of the moment Adrian realised the five numbers and two Lucky Stars matched their tickets.
When asked why they went public, Gillian replied, “We don’t want to hide anything.” The couple went on to say they wanted not only to enjoy the money themselves, but they wanted friends and family who also would benefit from their win to not have to feel like they had to hide. They went on to say they intended to use the money for good, and to share it amongst friends and family as much as possible. Gillian added she wanted to use the money “To make people smile.”
In terms of their future plans, the couple said buying a new house was “something they would consider”. However, Gillian commented that the first thing she did once she found out they had won was to go and look online at the car she had always dreamed of, an Audi Q7, totally blindsided that she could now afford not just to buy one, but to have one custom made.
The couple have tentatively told their children, one girl and one boy, about their win, but say they are too young to fully understand the implications. They are looking forward to getting their family normality back, despite their massive lottery win, and are intending to rely on their circle of close friends to help them through the adjustment.
Adrian, a small business owner, plans to carry on running his shop – albeit working in the store less than previously! He set up his business 17 years ago, starting off as an indoor market trader who expanding to sell vinyl and musical instruments from his store, the Suffolk Music Centre Store. He runs this business with his business partner and friend, Richard Hudspith, who apparently was speechless when he heard about the win. Gillian works in the children’s ward at a local hospital which she loves, but is excited about giving up the shift work which means the couple spend little time together.
The couple are undoubtedly worthy winners of this giant Euromillions jackpot, with plans to support children’s charities, their friends and family, and we wish them all the best.
