Erith Lucky Dip

A Lucky Dip Lotto ticket bought by a couple in Erith, Bexley, scooped almost £3 million in the draw held on Wednesday 27 February, 2008.
Arthur Wright and his wife Jackie won matched all six main Lotto numbers to win £2,964,163, but they very nearly didn’t win a penny because Arthur almost didn’t buy a ticket.
Arthur, who works at GlaxoSmithKline, explained what happened: “I was travelling back from work and looking forward to getting home, so I contemplated not buying a ticket, but something made me change my mind and go out of my way to the newsagents in Erith,” he said. “I’m so glad I changed my mind!
Despite having bought a ticket that turned out to be worth almost £3 million, Arthur took a lot of convincing before he eventually accepted that he had won the jackpot.
”When I checked the numbers in the paper the following evening I thought someone was playing a practical joke so I checked online, on the TV and everywhere I could think of to confirm the numbers,” he said. “Then I started to realise that it was either a very elaborate joke or we really had won!”
Having accepted the fact that he was now a lottery multi-millionaire, the next task for Arthur was to tell his wife the good news. Jackie was out shopping with her daughter at the Lakeside complex, so he reached for the phone...
“I phoned Jackie to tell her and she thought we must have made a mistake,” he explained. “I knew she must have been in shock because when she got home she said she hadn’t been able to shop properly because she was so distracted!”
The Wrights, who are expecting their first grandchild this summer, are now planning to take their entire family to the Disney World Resort in Florida.Published: Monday 10th March 2008
