Edenthorpe Duo Win Rollover Millions

Edenthorpe Duo Win Rollover Millions
Updated: Thursday 24th April 2014

Two friends who live in Edenthorpe, South Yorkshire, won a quarter share of the Lotto rollover jackpot on Saturday 19 June, but neither one discovered the win until eleven days after the draw. The jackpot itself was worth £8,134,820, so Alan Stringer and Wally Jinks won a prize of £2,033,705, making each of them a millionaire. The two men, both in their early fifties, met in a pub around 17 years ago, so the sudden torrent of wealth they have enjoyed could be seen as a fitting reward for decades of hard work. But how was it that neither player discovered the win sooner?

The answer to that question needs to be prefixed by the fact that Wally and his wife Dawn went on holiday to Jersey on Saturday 19 June, and then didn’t check their tickets until several days after their return. “Dawn always buys and checks the tickets for Alan and I,” Wally explained. “She had bought these and left them at home while we went away. She finally checked them last Wednesday. I didn’t believe it when she showed me and it took some time and a call to Camelot to convince me.”

Once convinced that the lottery results had landed a share of the jackpot, Wally picked up the telephone and called Alan. “Wally called and told me to come over quick,” Alan said. “I checked and checked with them on the computer and TV and said well done it looks like you’ve won. Wally said no we’ve won. We didn’t have any idea how much we’d won even when we called the Lottery Line, when the lady told us we were millionaires I was just so shocked.”

The friends play three Lucky Dip entries in every Saturday draw, and the lottery results that finally clicked for them were 34, 37, 39, 41, 42 and 47. Now Wally, who has a tyre repair business, and Alan, who is an electrician, are preparing to put their fortunes to good use.

“Dawn and I can have a big holiday,” Wally said. “I’ve never thought about where I would dream to go, but the world is now our oyster.” A new car and a caravan are also on the cards.

Alan, like many Lotto players, has already given some thought to what he would do with a win like this. “I always said if I won a million I could put it in the bank and live off the interest. I can pay off the mortgage and I have already picked out a new car, although it is still second hand. Fifty is not bad age to win the money, I can spend it wisely and will take my time.”

Buy lottery tickets online today and you could win a £23 million rollover jackpot in the EuroMillions game this Friday 09 July or a £7 million rollover jackpot in the Lotto game on Saturday. Good luck!
