Early Retirement for Jackpot Winner
A grandfather from East Sussex who was already planning to take early retirement in December 2011 has brought the happy day forward after winning a Lotto jackpot prize worth £1,158,038. Robert Hutchison, who is a HGV driver, was one of four jackpot winners on Saturday 11 June. The numbers for that draw were 09, 11, 35, 37, 40 and 45, but Robert didn’t find out about his win until the next day. The 62 year old was busy in his garden when his wife Carol checked their email account and discovered a message from the lottery operator waiting in their inbox.
“I was in the garden sorting out my pond when Carol called me in,” Robert explained. “We both expected it to be a tenner and when I logged in, a big ‘CONGRATULATIONS’ popped up. Neither of us could believe it, it was pretty surreal I guess.”
The couple called the lottery operator and the win was confirmed, but becoming a millionaire overnight isn’t the kind of thing that anyone gets used to in an instant, so they carried on with their day as they had originally intended to and went shopping for a new pump for their garden pond.
“I had been worried about the new pump,” Robert said. “It was £350 but I had to get it for the fish. I suppose now I can afford it.”
Robert and Carol have four children and eight grandchildren, and they plan to use some of their Lotto winnings to treat their family. Other plans include buying a new car, a new bathroom, taking a trip to Italy and upgrading a previously booked holiday to Cornwall. “We wanted to go to the Scilly Isles but the helicopter was quite expensive, so we were thinking about the three hour ferry ride,” Robert said. “We can now fly in the chopper, which will be fantastic.”
We congratulate Robert and Carol on their Lotto win and wish them a long and happy retirement. And for those of you who haven’t yet won a major lottery prize, we would remind you that there is a massive £105 million EuroMillions jackpot up for grabs this Friday 24 June. Buy your lottery tickets online and if you win the jackpot then you too could take early retirement!
