A lottery player from Darlington has won a jackpot worth more than £2.7 million. Mark Weir, who is 45, matched all six winning numbers of 2, 23, 38, 41, 47 and 49 in the Lotto draw on Wednesday 21 May, 20008.
Mark, who is an enthusiastic fisherman in his spare time, works at a plastic extrusion factory. He and his wife Julie have two children – Jack, who is 13, and Sadie, who is 12. Mark had bought his winning ticket from Premier News & Food in Darlington, and discovered his win on Teletext on Thursday morning as he was preparing for what he thought would be just another routine day at work.
“I saw the numbers come up on the TV and was sure they were the same as the ones on my ticket,” Mark said. “I called Julie and she didn’t believe me when I said we’d won the jackpot. We checked our numbers over and over again before realising that we could be millionaires. Waiting for the National Lottery office to open at 9am felt like the longest half hour of our lives.”
Darlington’s latest jackpot winners are still getting used to the idea of being multi-millionaires, but Julie is already looking forward to visiting New York for the shopping trip of her dreams. They have not yet made any other plans about how the money will be used.Published: Tuesday 27th May 2008
