Britain's Biggest Winners Go Public
Updated: Thursday 24th April 2014
The British couple who landed a £56 million half-share of the EuroMillions lottery jackpot last Friday 12 February have been named as Nigel Page and Justine Laycock. The couple’s lottery win is the biggest ever in the UK, and came just two days after Nigel had won a £55 prize from the Lotto game on Wednesday 10 February. Online lottery players will be encouraged to hear that Nigel bought his winning tickets via the internet, so there was no risk of him missing out on his life-changing prize even if he had neglected to check the lottery results. As it was, he checked his account on the morning of Saturday 13 February…
“I’d already checked my National Lottery account and had seen I’d won £55 on Lotto when I decided to buy two Lucky Dips for the big EuroMillions jackpot on Friday,” Nigel explained. “I didn’t think about it again until Saturday morning when I was watching the news with my daughter and saw that there was one UK winner who shared the jackpot with a ticket in Spain. I remember even joking it might be me!
“I logged on to my account and saw the Lotto win for £55 in my account and just below it was the £56 million EuroMillions prize. I started shaking and couldn’t speak. I just kept looking at it on in the screen in front of me but I couldn’t say a word!”
Justine was enjoying a Saturday morning lie-in as Nigel sat speechless at his computer, but eventually he had to go and rouse her and share the good news.
“I knew something was up as Nigel never wakes me up on a Saturday morning and he looked so worried,” Justine said. “All he said was ‘I need you urgently. I need to show you something’. I thought something awful had happened but he took me to the computer and there it was on the screen. His hands were shaking so much, he couldn’t pick up the phone so I called the lottery line and they confirmed it was true. We were the £56 million winners!”
“It’s so strange as I’d been out the night before with friends and as I’d bought a ticket as well, we’d been talking about what we thought would happen if you won,” Justine continued. “I joked that the machine would explode, smoke would come out from it with ticker-tape and glitter and six gold-painted Egyptian men would come out and carry me off! It was slightly different!”
There were no Egyptian men and no explosions, but there was a £56 million payout that put Nigel and Justine at the top of the table as far as Britain’s biggest lottery winners are concerned. The couple now intend to put their money to good use, but their plans are fairly modest considering the magnitude of their win, with a new home, new cars and being generous to friends their main concerns.
We congratulate Nigel and Justine, and encourage anyone else who wants to be the next big online winner to buy lottery tickets online today. Whether you play the £2.4 million Lotto game this Wednesday or the £13 million EuroMillions game on Friday, an outright jackpot win in either case would be certain to change your life forever!Published: Tuesday 16th February 2010
