Bachelor Wins EuroMillions
A EuroMillions lottery win made Christmas 2007 one to remember for a bachelor living in Warrenpoint, Count Down. John McGivern, who has six sisters living nearby, matched five main numbers and one Lucky Star number to win £373,854 in the EuroMillions draw that was held on Friday 21 December.
When John purchased the ticket he used the Lucky Dip feature to generate his numbers randomly. When the draw had taken place, he checked his numbers on Teletext and saw that he’d missed out on the jackpot by just one Lucky Star. However, the prizes for five main numbers and a single Lucky Star can still be life-changing, and when it dawned on him that he had won a significant cash sum, John was stunned.
“I just stared and stared at the television,” John said. “It was the wee small hours of the morning and I couldn't ring any of my family so I must have stared at the television set for about half an hour.”
John, who is a bachelor, works as a cargo-checker for Mourne Shipping Supplies Company. He was looking forward to getting back to work even after his six-figure win and has no intention of leaving the Warrenpoint that he has lived in his entire life. Instead, he plans to buy his own home.
“I won't have to worry about paying the rent in future,” he said. “I have been playing the lottery every since it started and have won a number of smaller amounts. I still can't believe my luck – it’s been a wonderful Christmas present.”
Although the odds of winning a EuroMillions jackpot are just 1 in 76,275,360, the odds of winning a second tier prize are a much better 1 in 5,448,240, and as John McGivern would no doubt be happy to confirm, winning a second tier prize can still have a very meaningful impact on your life.Monday 7th January 2008
