Airport Syndicate Lands Jackpot
Updated: Friday 18th September 2015
A syndicate of 23 National Lottery players who all work at Heathrow Airport is celebrating after landing a half-share of the Lotto jackpot on Saturday 5 December. The jackpot was worth £5,250,430, so the airport syndicate’s share was worth £2,625,215. Most people would be taken completely by surprise at such a win, but the leader of the syndicate – 55 year old Paul Cotter – was told several years ago by a fortune teller that he would one day enjoy a big win, and the good news for him is that she just happened to be right!
Paul discovered the win on the Sunday after the draw when he was trying to solve difficulties with his computer. “I’ve been having problems with my computer and was on the telephone to the engineer for an hour on Sunday trying to get it working again,” he explained. “As soon as it was fixed I thought I’d better check the lottery tickets quickly in case I lost the internet connection. I starting running through the lines but thought my eyes must be deceiving me – I just couldn’t believe it. I kept double and triple checking until I was sure. You don’t want to get something like this wrong!”
After plenty of checking, Paul finally allowed that fact that they had won to sink in, and that was when the celebrating and sharing of the good news started. “Sunday was one of the best days of my life,” he said. “As I was ringing round giving everyone the news I felt like Father Christmas! I was on the phone from 11 o’clock in the morning through to nine at night and everyone’s reaction was fantastic. Most have won around £100,000 which is going to make this Christmas a very special one.”
The lottery syndicate has been playing the Lotto for two years and won with a Lucky Dip ticket purchased from a branch of W H Smith at Heathrow Airport. Whether the syndicate members will be treating themselves to a flight or two to somewhere sunny after Christmas hadn’t be confirmed, but we would bet that at least a few of the members will be doing exactly that.
There are four more Lotto draws to go before Christmas, so there is still time for several more jackpots to be won prior to the big day. The jackpot for the Lotto draw this Saturday 12 December will be worth around £4.5 million, and the EuroMillions game on Friday 11 December has £39 million up for grabs, so if you fancy winning a festive jackpot, you know what to do – buy lottery tickets online today!Published: Thursday 10th December 2009
