What are News feeds

News feeds are items of news that are delivered (or fed) to subscribers automatically as they are published. The main advantage of subscribing to a news feed is that, because the news is delivered to you automatically, you don’t need to expend any effort visiting the news pages of web sites personally. Feeds are therefore convenient and can save you a lot of time.

The term RSS is often used to describe news feeds, and although this can stand for “Rich Site Summary” the majority of people understand it to mean “Really Simply Syndication” because news feeds allow web site owners to syndicate their content in a really simple way.

News feeds themselves aren’t the prettiest of things because they aren’t designed to be read by human beings. They are actually designed to be read by computers which visit the feeds, extract the information and then deliver it in a more user-friendly format to the subscriber via a news reader application.

News Readers

Before you can take advantage of news feeds, you must first get a piece of software known as a news reader. News readers come in various forms, and can either work as stand-alone applications or they can operate as part of a more general web browser. The advantage of the stand-alone versions is that you can download news stories to the hard drive of your PC and retrieve these even when you aren’t connected to the internet. The advantages of web browser news readers are that you can use them on a number of computers and you don’t have to worry about taking up too much space on your hard drive.

News readers work in a way that is fairly simple to understand. The reader keeps a list of all the news feeds you have chosen to subscribe to and then checks some or all of those feeds (according to your preference) to see if any new stories have been published. If they have, the reader retrieves the story and lists it on your screen. You can then click on any story title that takes your interest and read the whole thing. Think of a news reader as a very clever electronic paperboy who only delivers the stories you’re likely to be interested in and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect.

Just as there are many different web browsers and word processors, there are many different news readers that you can choose from, such as Firefox, Opera and Safari. The type of reader you choose should be determined by the operating system of your computer, whether you want a stand-alone reader or one that is integrated into a web browser, and your personal preference.

Subscribing to News feeds

Once you have selected a news reader, you need to subscribe to one or more news feeds. Some readers ask you to cut and paste the URL of a feed into the reader manually, but these days it is far more common to be able to subscribe to a feed at the click of a button, either by searching for feeds on a particular subject and selecting the ones you want to add to your list, or by clicking an RSS button on the web pages you visit.
