Powerball is a multi-state lottery that is currently played in 43 states and two jurisdictions in the USA, making it one of the biggest lotteries in America. Players must select five numbers from the range 1 to 59, plus one Powerball lottery number from the range 1 to 35 to win a jackpot that starts at a minimum of US$40 million. There are two Powerball draws each week and these take place every Wednesday and Saturday with the lottery results and prize breakdowns available to view online shortly after the draw.

To win the Powerball jackpot a player must match all five main numbers and the additional Powerball number itself, and the odds of doing this are 1 in 175,223,510. The good news is that these odds often help to generate some truly gigantic Powerball jackpots, and there are plenty of secondary prizes that can be won by players who match fewer numbers, as the table below illustrates:
|Numbers Matched||Odds of Winning||Prize|
|5 main numbers + Powerball||1 in 175,223,510||Jackpot|
|5 main numbers||1 in 5,153,632.64||$1 million|
|4 main numbers + Powerball||1 in 648,975.96||$10,000|
|4 main numbers||1 in ,19,087.52||$100|
|3 main numbers + Powerball||1 in 12,244.82||$100|

|2 main numbers + Powerball||1 in 706.43||$7|
|1 main number + Powerball||1 in 110.81||$4|

Powerball Lottery jackpots
Powerball players also have the option to play the Power Play for an additional fee. This multiplies any non-jackpot prize by between 2 and 5 times according to the Power Play number drawn at random after the main draw. So, if a Powerball player opts for the Power Play, wins US$100 by matching four main numbers and the Megaplier is 5, the player would win 5 x US$100 = US$500. However, for the Powerball Match 5 prize tier players opting for the Power Play, and match all five main numbers drawn, will win a set prize of $2 million.
The rollover feature in this lottery has generated some incredible jackpots in the past. The biggest ever Powerball lottery jackpot was worth US$590.5 million and this was won by one ticket from Florida on Saturday 18th May 2013.
Powerball and other Lotteries
American States used to offer either Powerball or Megamillions to their customers, but since the start of 2010, many states have been able to offer both lottery games. Outside the USA, Italy's Superenalotto is becoming known for massive jackpots akin to those found in Euromillions.
