White feathers helped a woman from Dewsbury to win a £1,218,618 share of the Lotto jackpot on Saturday 19 July, 2008. The feathers – viewed by some as a good omen – were seen by Susan Crossland around the anniversary of her late father’s death, and she took this to mean that he was sending her a gift.
Susan, who is 44, won with the line of numbers that her father had played and matched all six of them when 6, 9, 13, 18, 29 and 30 were drawn. She discovered the win with her husband Michael the next morning.
“Michael and I always get up early and we turned on Teletext on Sunday morning at 6.00am to check our numbers,” Susan explained. “I knew immediately that we had won as they were my father’s numbers. I started screaming and running round the house and then went to get the children out of bed so I could tell them too!”
Michael works at a dairy, but he has no intention of quitting and was back at work at 3:30am the very next morning. What the couple will be doing is buying a bigger home. They plan to become foster carers – something that was already in the pipeline before the win but will now be a whole lot easier with the financial side of life taken care of. Susan believes her win was down to fate.
“My win must be fate which is why I saw the feathers and won on his number line,” she said. “I sat in a daze until Sunday afternoon, I really couldn’t tell you I was doing, then I eventually called Camelot. It has been like a whirlwind ever since and the whole win feels very surreal at the moment!”
