In February 2012 the EuroMillions lottery game will make changes to the way the jackpot cap works. As regular readers will be aware, the jackpot cap is the level at which the EuroMillions jackpot cannot grow any further, no matter how many rollovers take place. Right now the cap is set at €190 million, and that cap is set to increase by €5 million if a €190 million jackpot is won. The rules concerning this cap and its ability to increase in size had been a tad confusing for some players, so the new rules will make things easier to understand.
From Friday 17 February, the EuroMillions jackpot cap will be set at a permanent €190 million (or €195 million if a €190 million jackpot is won before that date). In addition, a rule will be introduced which prevents any two consecutive draws offering that maximum jackpot, so if no player matches all seven numbers required to win a €190 million jackpot two weeks in a row, the jackpot fund will be rolled down to the next highest prize tier that has winners.
For example, let’s imagine that the EuroMillions jackpot reaches €190 million after a series of rollovers and that it rolls over yet again. Because of the jackpot cap, the jackpot for the next game would be worth no more than €190 million no matter how many tickets were purchased. Should that €190 million jackpot fail to be won, it would be made available in the next draw. Then, if no player won the jackpot in the second €190 million draw, the jackpot fund would be shared by players at the next highest winning level. In most cases that would be the second tier (for players matching five main numbers plus one Lucky Star) but if there were no winners at that level the jackpot would roll down to the third or even the fourth tier, as necessary.
These EuroMillions jackpot cap changes don’t change the odds of winning the jackpot in the slightest, and most players will probably only ever need to be aware of them when the jackpot rolls up to €190 million or so, but if and when that happens you will now know exactly what to expect.
Talking of EuroMillions rollovers, the jackpot in the midweek draw on Tuesday 17 February rolled over for the third time in a row, so the next jackpot this Friday will be worth around £40 million. Buy your lottery tickets online today and you just might win it!
