Lottery Good Causes

Good Causes is the collective term used to refer to the social and charitable organisations that receive lottery funding. Most lotteries throughout the world will set aside a proportion of the money raised from the sale of lottery tickets to give to good causes, although the amounts given and the causes supported will vary from country to country.

In the UK, 28p from every £1 spent on UK Lotto tickets is allocated to the National Lottery Good Causes Fund which generates approximately £30 million for the fund every week.  These funds are then divided between twelve organisations according to a formula set by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The UK Lotto plays no role in deciding how funds raised for good causes are distributed between organisations or which charities will receive support from those organisations.

The allocation up to 31st March 2013 was as follows:

Once each of the twelve bodies has received its funding, the responsibility for the distribution of the funds received lies with each organisation. Although the distributing bodies can vary from year to year, each will have a specialist understanding of their sector and/or local region. Potential beneficiaries must apply directly to the relevant body for funding.

Funds for good causes are used for a wide variety of projects at both a national and local level. At one end of the scale is the 2012 London Olympic Games which received a significant grant to help with the cost of hosting the games while, at the other end of the scale, is the 250 awarded to a Second World War veteran from Harrogate, plus a carer, to help towards travel costs for a commemorative visit within the UK in February of this year.
