Jackpot-Only Draws
Jackpot-only draws are lottery draws which only pay out a jackpot prize. This means that, unlike many other types of lottery draws, jackpot-only draws do not have several prize tiers and players do not receive any consolation for coming close to winning but missing one or two numbers.
Jackpot-only draws are generally secondary to a main lottery draw, and tickets are often sold only to players who participate in that main lottery. Having said this, some jackpot-only draws do not cost anything to enter, because entry is given automatically to players of the main lottery. This is often the case when the jackpot-only draw is being held to celebrate an important date or event, such as the birthday of the lottery itself. There are also a handful of jackpot-only draws in the world that are in fact stand-alone games in their own right.
Because jackpot-only draws don’t have several prize tiers, all of the money assigned to prizes goes straight into the jackpot fund. This means that jackpot funds are usually proportionately larger than those found in other types of draws.
From the perspective of the player, jackpot-only draws are simple win-or-lose games. If the player matches all of the numbers required to win the jackpot, they win. If they don’t match them all, they lose. There are no consolation prizes to worry about, so checking tickets for success or otherwise is as straightforward as it gets.
Of course, the fact that there are no consolation prizes can make jackpot-only draws frustrating for players who come close to winning but don’t quite get there. In other lotteries such players would probably receive a fairly large cash prize, but in jackpot-only draws they receive nothing.
Although jackpot-only draws are popular as free-to-enter celebratory games, they are generally not as popular as regular lottery draws when tickets need to be purchased.
