Lottery Good Causes
Good Causes is the collective term used to refer to the social and charitable organisations that receive lottery funds, or lottery grants, to assist their work. The majority of lotteries set aside a proportion of the money raised from the sales of lottery tickets to give to good causes, though obviously the causes supported vary from lottery to lottery.
Some lotteries exist to support just one good cause. For example, the California Lottery raises money for public schools in that state. In comparison, the National Lottery in the United Kingdom supports a wide variety of good causes that are involved in everything from arts and culture through to sport and education.
That fact that most lotteries support good causes is good for the lottery companies, the players and the good causes themselves. The lottery companies benefit because the fact that a percentage of money raised from ticket sales goes to one or more good causes makes the game itself more popular with the public, and so the ticket sales themselves increase over time. Players benefit because, as well as giving them the chance to win a life-changing amount of money for themselves, buying a lottery ticket also allows them to help the good causes. And, of course, the good causes benefit because the money they receive helps them to do their work more effectively.
It has been said by some that lotteries assisting good causes is a negative thing, because it allows governments around the world to invest less into social projects that really ought to be funded by the public treasury. In this respect, the critics argue that lotteries are a form of voluntary taxation, because they help pay for things that should already be paid for through regular taxes. On the opposing side, others argue that if lotteries didn’t exist, many good causes would be unable to do their work effectively because governments simply don’t have money to support all of the organisations that are worth supporting.
Whatever point of view you side with, the fact remains that good causes do benefit greatly from lotteries, and that lottery games are a very effective way of supporting the social and charitable organisations that work so hard to help others.
