The Secret Millionaire

National Lottery More than £32 billion has been paid out to winners since the National Lottery was first launched in the UK in November 1994. That’s a lot of money, and it means that there could well be a “secret millionaire” living in your area.

National Lottery organisers say that over 2,100 people have become millionaires or multi-millionaires since the lottery was launched. Looking at the figures another way, 1 in 23,500 adults in the UK is a lottery millionaire. Whilst we can’t expect all of these millionaires to be spread evenly across the country, if they were we would find no less than 19 lottery jackpot winners living in Manchester, 191 in Edinburgh and 320 in London.

Not all lottery winners opt for publicity, so the chances are that you aren’t very far from one of them. But how could you possibly tell? Here’s our tongue-in-cheek guide to spotting the secret millionaire in your neighbourhood:

Flash Cars – Take a look around your local NCP and see if there’s a Rolls Royce, Bentley or Ferrari parked among the more common family cars. Such cars could belong to a local businessman, but if the registration is LOTTO 1 or J4POT then you may well have found yourself a winner.

Home Improvements – Lots of people spend money on home improvements, so you can’t assume that everyone having a loft converted or a new kitchen fitted has been lucky on the lottery. However, if you spot someone replacing their lawn with a helipad, you could be onto something...

Garden Parties – Regular garden parties tend to involve just a few friends, neighbours and family members. If someone in your area hires out the local football pitch, imports crates of Champagne directly from the historic French province of the same name and invites a small army of guests, consider that a fair indication that lottery winnings might be helping to pay for the event.

Okay, so the above pointers probably won’t allow you to identify the secret millionaires living in your area, but there is a sensible point we can get from all of this: If you win the lottery and you want to keep quiet about it, be careful to avoid flaunting your wealth in obvious ways. If you don’t, you’re likely to get plenty of publicity as a UK Lotto winner, whether you like it or not.
