Lucky Numbers 2009

Lucky Numbers 2009Following ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ numbers is a popular approach to playing lottery games, so for those of you who like to know what’s hot and what’s not, we are pleased to reveal the luckiest and unluckiest Lotto numbers of 2009. Of course, knowing which numbers are hottest and coldest won’t affect your odds of winning (if it did then lotteries around the world would soon go out of business) but it can definitely make your number-selection process a bit more interesting. If you win a jackpot as well then that’s just a very big bonus!

Lucky numbers can be defined as those that just happen to be drawn more often than others, and unlucky numbers as those drawn less often. All lottery numbers have an equal chance of being drawn in any single draw, but the fact remains that some numbers will be drawn slightly more or less often than others – this is just one of those things that mathematicians and statisticians have come to accept as routine.

Our Lottery Statistics page is a good place to go for details of how Lotto numbers have fared since the game began in 1994. Take a look at that page and you will see that the number 38 has been the luckiest of all, having been drawn 209 times. Numbers 23, 31, 11, 43 and 25 are the next five luckiest numbers overall, having been drawn 199, 198, 198, 197 and 196 times, respectively.

The unluckiest number since the Lotto game began has been number 20, which has been drawn 144 times. The numbers 41 (drawn 150 times), 13 (155 times), 16 (155 times), 21 (159 times) and 15 (161 times) follow close behind.

But what about 2009 specifically? Obtaining statistics for a particular period of time is a bit trickier and requires the ability to extract and analyse selected portions of raw data that most lottery players don’t have time for. The good news is that Lottery.co.uk maintains its own databases and can therefore crunch the required numbers on command. It is therefore with pleasure that we announce the luckiest and unluckiest numbers of 2009. Drum roll please…

The luckiest number of 2009 was the number 39, which has been drawn on 22 occasions since the start of the year. The number 32 is a very close runner-up, having been drawn 21 times. Numbers 09, 31, 23 and 36 (drawn 18, 18, 17 and 16 times respectively) complete our ‘lucky six’ for the year.

And the unluckiest numbers of 2009? Well, that has proven to be a very close-run race, and there are two joint ‘winners’ of the title, with numbers 07 and 15 both being drawn 4 times. The next three numbers drawn least often are similarly tied, with numbers 14, 22 and 29 having all been drawn 7 times. The sixth number to be drawn least often in 2009 was number 12, which was drawn 8 times.

As we explained earlier, none of this means that following (or avoiding) certain numbers will change your odds of winning, and even the ‘unluckiest’ numbers of 2009 have each appeared in 4 jackpot line-ups each, so you should feel free to play whatever numbers appeal to you. That said, knowing which numbers have been lucky and which have been less lucky is definitely of interest, if only from a lottery trivia perspective!
