Lotto Dreams

Champagne Lotto games and dreams have long been associated, but this article is not about the kind of dreams we have when we go to sleep at night. Instead, it’s about the daydreams that lottery games help to fuel, and about why lottery dreams can actually be good for us even if we aren’t lucky enough to win.

The daydreams that lottery games encourage are ones that allow us to think in terms of possibilities rather than problems. Instead of thinking about problems at work or at home, or wondering whether things will ever improve, lottery-fuelled dreams invariably assume that the future will be better, brighter and more fulfilling than it is now. This may not really be the case at all (there are plenty of lottery jackpot winners who have unfortunately allowed the money to ruin their lives) but the very act of thinking about the future is such positive terms can be extremely beneficial.

First, thinking optimistically about the future can be very good for reducing our current stress levels. If you currently think that you’re overworked and underpaid, looking forward to the time when you can walk away from that situation can put a smile of satisfaction on your face as soon as you do it. Similarly, if you are a stay at home mother in the school holidays with a couple of noisy children to take care of, looking forward to the day when you can laze on the pure white beach of a tropical paradise with a cocktail in your hand can make the current situation seem a little less hectic.

Lottery dreams are also good at awakening dormant ambitions that we might not realise we have. By dreaming about what we will do with all the free time that we would be able to enjoy as jackpot winners, we might discover that we want to paint in oils, write novels or play lead guitar in a rock band. Once we have become conscious of these ambitions, we can actually start to pursue them now instead of waiting until we are wealthy. Our lives therefore get richer even before we have won.

Last, but not least, daydreaming about being a lottery winner often makes us aware that we want to do something to benefit society as well as ourselves. Like those unconscious personal ambitions mentioned a moment ago, when we realise that we would really like to help a certain good cause or community, we can begin doing so, albeit in a smaller way than we would probably be able to after a life-changing win.

As you can see, the simple act of daydreaming about winning the lottery can bring a number of benefits here and now. If we really do win a jackpot in the future, so much the better, but even if we don’t, participating – and the daydreaming that goes with it – will still have been worthwhile.
