Ever since National Lottery games were introduced to the British public way back in 1994, certain ideas have been passed from one player to another and readily accepted at face value. Unfortunately, not all of the ideas that have been accepted are in fact accurate, and a few are downright misleading. In this article we identify a few of the most common ‘lottery myths’ which could mislead players, and in doing so we tell you the truth behind each one. If you have ever wondered if it makes sense to follow hot or cold numbers, or to buy tickets from a particular outlet, read on and we’ll tell you…
Lottery Myth #1 – Hot and Cold Numbers
The first lottery myth that we would like to bust says that being aware of hot and cold numbers, and including or avoiding then, can improve your chances of winning. A hot number is defined as one that has cropped up more than average, and a cold number as one that has been drawn less than average. Whilst tracking such Lottery Statistics can make your lottery participation a bit more involving – and therefore more fun – no number had a better or worse chance of being drawn than any other. For this reason, playing hot or cold numbers, or avoiding them, doesn’t alter your odds of winning a lottery prize one bit.
Lottery Myth #2 – Lucky Outlets
Some players have travelled hundreds of miles just to buy themselves a lottery ticket from a ‘lucky outlet’ where one or more jackpot-winning tickets have previously been sold. Unfortunately, you cannot improve your chances simply by purchasing your ticket from an outlet which just happens to have sold winning tickets previously, and the myth of any given outlet being “lucky” is just one that journalists use to come up with sensational headlines. That means if you buy lottery tickets online you have just as much chance of winning as someone who drives cross country to buy them from the ‘luckiest’ outlet of all.
Lottery Myth #3 – Repeating Numbers
Quite a few players are more than a little superstitious about playing – or not playing – numbers that were drawn in the most recent draw. Some think that playing the same numbers is a good idea because they are more likely to show up again, whilst others think that the odds of numbers repeating so quickly are somehow less than the odds of other numbers appearing. Both points of view are mistaken. As we said in relation to Hot and Cold numbers earlier, all numbers have exactly the same chance of appearing in each draw, so whether you pick particular numbers, avoid particular numbers or buy a Lucky Dip ticket, your odds of winning a prize – including the jackpot itself – are always the same.
Lottery Myth #4 – The Big Secret
The final myth that we want to bust here is that there is some kind of ‘big secret’ which can give players a clear advantage over those who aren’t aware of it. There are plenty of companies on the internet which imply that they have discovered this ‘secret’ and they will usually offer to sell you an e-book or software package that promises to put this information at your disposal, but sadly no such secret exists. The only way of increasing your chances in any lottery game is by purchasing more tickets, so our advice would be to avoid the e-books and software packages and use the cash you save to buy yourself an extra ticket or two instead!
Lottery myths will be around for as long as lottery games continue to exist, but if you remember the basic fact of all lottery games – that they are truly random events which can never be manipulated or predicted – then you will be able to tell the myths apart from the reality without too much difficulty. Have fun and good luck!
